We went to see Bence's dance team perfom yesterday at the Hungarian National Dance Theatre with Bálint, and it was terrific. Folk dance in the way of theatrical dance, so kinda story line. Now I am wathcing this U2 Go Home - Live at Slane Castle dvd, and we're about to go to my grandparents as my grandma has her birthday in a couple of days.

"You've been all over and it's been all over you..." " over and over again" Next saturday we're having this occasional movie-watching & Catan-playing day at my place with some friends. Hopefully the weather will be fine, I think sg like 18-20 degrees and then probably we can have lunch in the garden or on the terrace.

If anyone's interested in the sights of Bp watch the I spy movie of Eddie Murphy, because it takes place in Bp, and although the movie is real shit it offers a picturesque view of the city. In fact a lot of movies were shot in Bp - part of Evita, and the whole Underworld movie was shot in a building that is not yet finished but supposedly it will be a swimming pool and a sports centre for my university (BME). Lol. "La, la, la, lalalala....until the end of the world........" Labels:

Climbing was shitty yesterday... as soon as we got out of the car we recognized that there was this icy-snowy-melting white stuff on the ground, but the cliff looked dry as we could see from that distance. As a consequence we decided to walk up to the bottom of the cliff. Well, it was very funny how we were walking on this melting sg that was real slippery. When we reached the rock we had to realize that there was 10 cm mud down on the ground :((((((((((((( enough to make my shoes dirty as hell, and also my fave climbing shoes. And we did not really climb in the end, it was too dirty and we couldn't step on the rock with clean soles, so it was senseless .... senseless as climbing with 1 cm of mud on your soles. Next time baby!!!!

As for my job: I got a new sun workstation as a present yesterday. It's really cool, new TFT, claviature, etc.

I hate to be open with boys - it always strikes back upon me. But trying not to look back in anger..... No, in fact I am quite calm, it's just that if I spend a lot of time with a guy he takes it wrong. All the time. No matter what I would say..... Ok, luckily my dearest friends are not like this, I can jump into their arms whenever I meet them, and we love each other soooo much.

"Sing me sg new...... Stand by me, nobody knows the way it's gonna be"

I was wondering about adding some extras to my blog, like it would be cool if people could probably comment on my writings. Maybe it would be funny.... anyway.... "I'm just the pieces of the man I used to be..." Have I told you I have ticket for Queen's next show in Bp? I think it's gonna be 23 Apr, having Paul Rodgers as a lead singer.... he has a cool voice, though I have never heard about him before. Labels:

Everybody' changing and I don't feel the same..... we have wonderful weather today, there is this sparkling sunshine, approximately 13 degrees and no clouds above. And the weather forecast says it will last until thursday when it will be 20 degrees :o)))))))))))))))) SPRINGTIME at last. I feel sorry for those of you guys stayin up in the north, but I guess spring is also approaching the country of Santa Claus soon! I heard you have -7 today, hope at least it's sunny..... I think I will meet my friend Attila this afternoon, we haven't seen each other for a while, it's been almost two months. But I guess today the whole city is full of people celebrating the anniversary of the War of Independence, and it's a shame on me but I don't even have a cockade... well more or less because of political reasons. Actually a couple of years ago, it was in 2002 if I remember well, before he last elections the right-wing political party used it as a symbol and since then a lot of people not very keen on this don't wear it. Probably it's stupid, but you know those people wore this for approx. 2 months, whereas we only wear it for one day, March 15! Labels:

Sun is shining, the weather is sweet yeah
Make you wanna move your dancing feet now
When the mornin´ gather the rainbow,
Want you to know, I'm a rainbow too
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know, y'all, can you understand?
Do you believe me?
....
I'm a rainbow too

We have one of our national holidays tomorrow so that's why we have this Monday and Tuesday off from work. For those of you who are not so proficient in Hungary's history here is the plot: this is the Anniversary of the beginning of the 1848-49 Revolution and War of Independence which was fought against Austria as back then we were part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy ruled by the Habsburgs.

The events en bref:

  • 15 March 1848 Revolution breaks out in Pest. The Habsburg rulers are compelled to meet the demands of the Reform party.
  • 7 April King Ferdinand V appoints the first independent and responsible Hungarian government led by Count Lajos Batthyány, and on 11 April assents to the laws adopted by the last feudal Diet.
  • September 1848 A war of independence begins against the Habsburgs. After the initial defeats, the Hungarian troops win a series of victories.
  • 14 April 1849 The national assembly proclaims the dethronement of the Habsburgs and elects Lajos Kossuth as governor-president in Debrecen.
  • 13 August 1849 Fall of the War of Independence: the Anti-Habsburg War of Independence ends in defeat when the Imperial Russian Army comes to Vienna's aid. The Hungarian army led by General Görgey capitulates to the Austrian emperor's and the Russian tzar's superior forces at Világos.
  • 6 October 1849 The martyrs of the War of Independence (13 leading generals of the War of Independence and of the leader of the first autonomous Hungarian government) are executed in Arad, Lajos Batthyány in Pest. By way of retaliation, all laws adopted in 1848-1849 are invalidated, only the liberation of serfs remains in force. The constitutional independence of Hungary is abolished and the Austrian customs and legal system is introduced.

Mmmhhh, well I just read that the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was only set up in 1867 which is a bit weird for me, but probably true. Anyway we were ruled by the Austrians back in 1848 and had no parliament, nor a democratic government, nor a republic. Ok to put it right, the era after the War of Independence:

  • 1849-1867 Oppresive direct rule from Austria: the Bach Period (Bach was a minister). Kossuth & thousands in emmigration; many thousands imprisoned; strict censorship; memories & stagnation. After Austria's defeat in the Austrian-Russian war of 1866 a new empire is created, unified in the person of the emperor (Franz Joseph: Austrian emperor & Hungarian king). The empire contains two ethnic groups, Germans and Magyars, as equal partners.
  • 1867 Due to Ferenc Deák "sage of the nation" a compromise is agreed between nation and Crown. The Hungarians seize the opportunity to inflict a further defeat on the weakened Habsburgs. The 50 years after the 1867 compromise are one of Hungary's better periods. A very dynamic economic and cultural development started: by the end of the century Hungary was closer to Western-European standards than ever, at least after Mohács. Some highlights from this period: an extensive railway network was built in the country. Educational reforms were introduced & massive industrialization started: by the end of the century Hungarian industry was leading in certain fields (electricity, transport industry, telecommunication). Hungary's cultural life flourished.
Every year 15 March the city and buildings are bannered and people wear a cockade, sg like this on their coats:

THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL - dir. Wim Wenders, OST U2, Mel Gibson, Jeremy Davies, Milla Jovovich, Bono,...

I have found the previous verse on the official website of The Million Dollar Hotel, one of my fave movies. It's a very dominant movie for me, or was in my life and I did not I only fall in love with it because of Bono's involvement in the whole project. But it really is a terrific movie..... As far as I know Bono came up with the idea of the film and sold it to Mel Gibson's production company. The director being Wim Wenders needs no explanation after the long time U2 and Wenders worked togther for both on the movie Faraway, So close! and the video for U2's Stay (Faraway, So Close!). I think U2 also provided music for his Until the End of the World movie with a song by the same title.

A comment for myself: Faraway, So Close! was the kinda sequel to a former Wenders movie entitled Wings of Desire. And City of Angels was the american remake of Faraway, So Close! also scoring the hit song If God Will Send His Angels by U2.

Ok, I got a bit off from the point, so back to TMDH. The idea of the movie came from a hotel in LA that once was the centre of film-makers back in the time of Griffith. Two hotels stood vis-á-vis of each other where flamboyant parties were thrown and where all these film tycoons had their offices in the golden era of cinematography. Later as the industry moved out of the city the buildings soon became desolate and now again it is a hotel where one can get a bed for sg like 8-10 bucks. This somehow is the place homeless can afford in order to stay away from the streets. And Bono turned this idea into a script...

The Million Dollar Hotel is the sort of place that makes the sane look crazy. It is almost as if all the insane people in the world reside in this hotel, making it seem like a sort of mental hospital. When one of the residents shows up dead, it is up to one earnest detective and a handful of erratic tenants to figure out what happened.....

In the beginning, we meet Tom Tom (Jeremy Davies), a mentally disturbed guy who lives at the hotel. Tom Tom’s best friend was Izzy Goldkiss who had unexpectedly died a few days earlier. At first, Izzy’s death was thought to be a suicide but when Detective Skinner (Mel Gibson) comes along, he believes otherwise: he hangs around the hotel and its occupants searching for clues. Tom Tom meets Skinner and immediately becomes enchanted by the excitement that the detective brings. All Tom Tom ever wanted out of life was escape – and a little attention, of course from the girl of his dreams, the mysterious Eloise (Milla Jovovich).

The hotel at first is full of laughs and oddities. Besides the presence of the dumb yet lovable Tom Tom and the detached Eloise, there are others including a man who believes he is the fifth Beatle and an elderly woman with the mouth of a truck driver. All the eccentricities aside, The Million Dollar Hotel ends up as a collection of sad people. The saddest of all is the bittersweet relationship between Tom Tom and Eloise, who both are a little off centre from the rest of society, but still manage to know their place in the world.

Surprisingly, Gibson, who is normally the principal character in his movies, takes a supporting role here. Most of the charm and appeal that Gibson usually provides is missing here, partly because his character is not the main attraction.

A lot of U2 music is used in the film, as well as a quick blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo appearance by Bono himself.

I read a very mmh... interesting critic about the movie somewhere saying "[the movie] doesn't live up to its name, nor to the promise of big-name stars like Gibson, Bono or Jovovich, yet it does manage to convey a melancholy yet purposeful mood. Although slow-paced, the movie does say something about the simple people we encounter and all too often take for granted." I was thinking an awful lot about this, I think the movie is frenetic, and its magic is the melancholic atmosphere these mentally disturbed people provide us...

Critics:

  • "A film with a red hot fire blazing in its belly -- the best adaptation of a Kurt Vonnegut novel that Kurt Vonnegut never wrote."
  • "The most interesting thing I've ever seen [Mel Gibson] do." Yeah, not a typical good-guy-hero movie...
  • "Will lead to a rapid exit for everyone but the diehard Wendersian." Probably that's true as none of my parents nor friends liked it, generally they hated it!!! :o( Does that induce that people loving this movie are somehow freaks themselves?!
  • "A fascinating failure."
  • "...rambling, incoherent garbage passed off as an art film."

I think critics mostly concerned this as a bad piece of arty movie.... and I agree with the fact that people generally don't like it. I would merely recommending this for those who like the tricky ones. The ones that stuck in your mind and you can't get them out of it. The ones make you think for a while.... the ones never being a Hollywood blockbuster!

The Heart is a Sleeping Beauty

The heart is the sleeping beauty
and love the only kiss it can't resist.
Even as eyes lay open wide,
there is a heart that sleeps inside,
and it's to there you must be hastening,
for all hearts dream,
they dream only of awakening.

There was a vote for "who the hell should be our next president" and many university students voted for Gyula Veszely a very cruel and strict professor at our university however he has nothing to do with politics. Here is the link, sorry it's in hungarian, but he is the last one on hte page. Gyula Veszely Labels:

We are just about to leave with mum and dad to go hiking. I really wonder how much snow we'll have. Btw the last quoted bit was from Life of Brian...

"That’s all I wanted, something special,
Something sacred in your eyes,
For just one moment, to be bold and naked
At your side

Sometimes I think that you’ll never understand me
Maybe this time is forever, say it can’t be

....

I will be your father figure (oh baby)
Put your tiny hand in mine (I’d love to)
I will be your preacher teacher (be your daddy)
Anything you have in mind (it would make me)
I will be your father figure (very happy)
I have had enough of crime (please let me)
I will be the one who loves you
Until the end of time"

George Michael - Father Figure

i really love this song, think it's just terrific. Perfect voice, rythm and all. Anyway I was really thinking about letting all people to comment on my postings, it could be funny. i just need time for that :o) Oh, mum is complaining, gotta go. Later!

The Queen concert will be 23 Apr, I haven't got a ticket yet, but hope will have the time for that next week. For me it seems to be promising. I mean i always loved their music, and I am curious about this new sound without Freddy Mercury. And by the way, Brian and Roger have amazing voices. But they gonna have a new singer, unfortunatelyI don't know this guy but allegedly he is pretty famous and had a couple of bands already.

Snow again. Tomorrow we go on a oneday excursion, last week there was 80 cm snow, so I guess tomorrow it will be even more. Oh, I bought a pair of new mountaineering trousers. They look gorgeous :o) I was looking for a photo but could fing only one that is in yellow. Mine are black. :(

My grandparents were here today, because of my birthday as we will go to the mountains when my birthday will be so we had to celebrate it earlier. We were drinking some nice Finnish vodka, the lemin version of Finlandia. It tastes real good.

EX-LEPER:  All right, sir.  My final offer: half a shekel for an old ex-leper.

BRIAN:  Did you say... 'ex-leper'?

EX-LEPER:  That's right, sir.  Sixteen years behind the bell, and proud of it, sir.

BRIAN:  Well, what happened?

EX-LEPER:  I was cured, sir.

BRIAN:  Cured?

EX-LEPER:  Yes, sir, a bloody miracle, sir.  God bless you.

BRIAN:  Who cured you?

EX-LEPER:  Jesus did, sir.  I was hopping along, minding my own business.  All of a sudden, up he comes.  Cures me.  One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone.  Not so much as a by your leave.  'You're cured mate.'  Bloody do-gooder.

At last this week seems to com to an end. Finally. I think this was the very first week f my life that was really busy. I was working for 34 hours, which for me seems quite a lot. probably it doesn't seem that much for somebody else.... but I am extremely tired. I must mention that I received my very first real task, we had to do porting for a C code and solve a TR. I just wanna mention this for myself so as later to remember this :o)

I had a nice talk with Bryan, he is my irish collegue. He is staying here in Hungary for a year and has a Romanian girlfriend. And if I remember well she is still studying. So, we talked about politics, hungarian politics and he was very well-informed. I was really amazed. And I must not forget he told me that the Irish Internet radio is here. Labels:
